Children & Youth

Minister for Children and Youth
1. The position of Minister for Children and Youth is a salaried, half-time position.
2. It is expected that the Minister for Children and Youth will average a 20 hour work week per calendar year.
3. The Minister for Children and Youth works under the direct authority of the Rector of the parish. The Vestry of the parish determines salary.
4. It is hoped that applicants will have some formal educational background in one or more areas of study relevant to the position (e.g. elementary education, childhood development, etc.) and some Christian Education experience directly relevant to the position. It is desirable, but not required, that such experience is in the context of the Episcopal Church.
5. The Minister for Children and Youth will be expected to conform, by word and example, to the doctrine, discipline and worship of the Episcopal Church, as set forth in the Book of Common Prayer and the National and Diocesan Canons.
6. The Minister for Children and Youth will be allowed paid vacation time of 2 weeks per calendar year.
Responsibilities:
The Minister for Children and Youth will:
oversee all aspects of the educational programs for children pre-school through high school. This will include but not be limited to: Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Fall Celebration, Easter Celebration, Christmas Pageant and other special events.
successfully complete the Diocesan-mandated training, “Safeguarding God’s Children”, will keep his/her certification up-to-date and will insure that all Sunday School Teachers, Nursery workers, etc. have successfully completed this program and that their certification is up-to-date.
recruit, train, coordinate and oversee the ministry of Sunday School teachers and adult/teens involved in special events. This will include but not be limited to: regular Sunday School Teachers meetings and other forms of regular communication.
be responsible for curricula selection, supplies, classroom items, etc.; will insure classrooms, storage areas, work rooms, etc are kept in an orderly fashion.
Oversee Nursery Ministry including but not limited to interviewing potential Nursery Workers and making recommendations to Rector for hiring; scheduling Nursery workers for Sunday and special occasions; be responsible for Nursery supplies, etc. Oversee Baby Rockers ministry.
meet regularly with the Rector to discuss the ministry and share information.
attend weekly staff meetings. He/she will coordinate with other staff members as appropriate.
be responsible for at least monthly meetings/events for the JAM’ers Youth Group (grades 2-5) and EYC (middle/high school); recruit adult volunteers to assist or be leaders for such meetings/events.
encourage youth participation in appropriate Diocesan events, including but not limited to: Acolyte Festival, New Beginnings, Happening, Summer Camp, etc.
as practicable, assist with one Diocesan children’s/youth event per year.
contribute announcements, articles, blogs, web pages, etc. for parish media; endeavor to keep children and youth, parents and parishioners informed of Children and Youth Ministry.

What an amazing and wonderful experience to see first hand how Deacon Geri has touched the lives of St. Thomas’ children. Thank you Deacon Geri for your kindness, your commitment, and most of all your desire to see our children grow and mature into godly people who love Christ.
